GREETINGS POTTERS GUILD MEMBERS!

POTTERS GUILD GENERAL MEETING TUESDAY FEBRUARY 11^TH 6 PM. ROBERT AND ROSE ESCAMILLA STUDIO 2013 BLANCO ROAD.

Can you believe we are already in the second month of 2014 and now less than a month away to our Empty Bowls Event on March 2^nd ?

 

To remain the effective event Empty Bowls has been the Guild needs volunteers to help make our 14^th year a resounding success. The bowls are in storage awaiting pick-up and delivery. If you can help please contact dneese@satx.rr.com. The food kitchen is staffed and the gallons of soups donated are being totaled up. In our Empty Bowls meeting with SAMM yesterday we outlined areas of critical volunteer help. One big area of need is our volunteer Break room food items. We have not been able to secure break room food donations this year. So as in the past we are asking everyone to bring a pot luck dish of snack food to the break room to share. Coffee and water will be available. Any Potters Guild member who would like to organize the break room please step forward at the meeting.

SAMM has volunteers ready to handle their share of Empty Bowl duties. The Potters Guild will need to fill certain responsibilities of our own as we prepare for the event. Those areas are set up of tables, unpacking the bowls. Set up of the Silent Auction area. Set up of the demo area. Help with the cashier’s booth and packing of bowls. We will certainly need help later in the day making sure the tables are put away, trash is taken out and the whole area that we use is properly taken care of.

All of this information and more will be discussed in depth at the General Meeting next week. Please come and receive your EMPTY BOWLS volunteer name tags (all volunteers must have name tags at the event) and sign up to support your Potters Guild. As in the past the EMPTY BOWLS EVENT has run so smoothly because of the volunteers. Getting it done from 8am and out by 3 pm.

Also representatives from SAMM will be presenting the program for the evening. What EMPTY BOWLS means from SAMM’s perspective of our shared community project to aid the hungry and homeless in San Antonio.  

Tuesday will be the last Potters Guild meeting before Empty Bowls. Come and be counted.

Bowl-a-thon! Friday and Saturday

Happy New Year Potters Guild Members!

I am looking forward to be getting my hands in clay for the first time this new year at this weekend’s BOWL-A-THON at the Southwest School of Art at 9 am on Friday, tomorrow. Plenty of clay to make bowls on Friday and trim bowls on Saturday. Plenty of good food as I will fire up the grill for some dogs and burgers. We might go a little later in the evening if we need to but we plan to be done by 6 pm both days.

Saturday afternoon kick off lunch, top off your burgers and dogs with some homemade chili provided by Janan Moses. If any of you would like to bring something delicious to add to the meals please do. Remember we will not have access to refrigeration in the studio. Ice chests with soft drinks and water will be available. Please bring your own coffee in the mornings.

*SATURDAY MORNING DISCOVERY FOR CHILDREN WILL BE HELD IN THE CERAMICS STUDIO* until around noon. We will need to make sure the studio is cleaned up Friday evening and all of our bowls and materials are put on carts and stored in the back while this class is in session. You may want to make plans to come a little later on Saturday because parking will be limited.

I want to ask for some volunteers to help keep the studio and bowls in order. Help load, fire and unload the bisque kilns.

 

If you haven’t replied to my earlier email let me know today if you will be there Friday or Saturday to make bowls. I need a head count to purchase our food stuff.  Also reply if you will help process the bowls through the kilns, packing later in the weeks ahead.

Status Report Empty Bowls 2014

I want to report on the status of Empty Bowls 2014.  Thanks to all members that have diligently volunteered and already put in time on the project. Here is information on what has been done and what needs to be done to make the event bigger and better than the last 12 years.

1.  The first bowl-a-thon netted about 400 bowls. They have been put in storage.  A second bowl-a-thon is scheduled for January 3-4 at Southwest School of Art (SSA).  Save the date and plan to join in. More info will follow. Please feel free to make bowls in your studio. The committee has set a goal of 2500 bowls again this year.
2. Dudley Harris’s bowls, donated last year and not used, have been cleaned and repacked by a committee headed by Melba Martinez.
3. The Silent Auction Committee headed by Leslie Newton gathered 46 donations at the Texas Clay Fest in Gruene. A box will be placed in the Ceramics studio of SSA when classes begin in January so you can drop off your donation or contact Leslie.
4. SAMMinistries is in the process of sending out donation letters to potential businesses.  As of November 27 there are 2 donations of soup already on the books.  The EB committee plans on a second meeting with SAMM in January.
5. Melba Martinez is chairperson of the Celebrity Bowls.  Glaze kits are being updated. SAMM is coordinating VIPs in the San Antonio area to glaze a special bowl.  If you know a celebrity that might glaze a bowl contact Melba.
6. Clay World has donated the clay for the bowls.

As in years past, volunteer help will be needed for Silent Auction, set up, and take down, etc.   A list of volunteer areas will be sent out in mid-January.

Call for Artists: San Antonio Clay Festival

We are pleased to announce our next Clay Festival will be on the grounds of San Antonio Museum of Art.
November 16th 10 a.m to 5 p.m. 200 West Jones Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78215.

SA Clay Fest affords SAPG members and other Clay Artisans an opportunity to showcase and sell their work. Entry fees help to pay for venue costs, advertising, postcards, postage, and labels. Artists are encouraged to present their highest quality artwork, in a professional display.
Rules for Entry:
Clay Fest 2013 is open to SAPG members and other regional Clay Artists..

• If you are not a member of SAPG or a member of SAPG less than one year, you can apply with 2 or 3
  digital images of your work for jury by the Exhibitions Committee (see contact info below.)
  
• Display set up is the responsibility of the artist and must include a 10 x 10 tent that is in good
  repair and suitable for this venue. (with a preference for a white tent)
  
• Booths MUST be weighted down. Information packet to follow with guidelines.
• Items offered for sale must be HANDMADE by the show artist - no exceptions.
  
• In an effort to focus the show on celebrating the ceramic medium, artists no longer
  working in ceramic as their primary medium should either sell or display some of their ceramic
  works.
  
• No commercial items are to be sold.
  
• Space is limited.
  • The application must be postmarked by October 25, 2013 to qualify for a single booth, with a fee of $100 for SAPG members and $135 for non- members and a ½ booth fee of $50 for
    SAPG members and $85 for non-members. (non-member fees include a $35 membership fee)
• After November 1st there will be no refunds of entry fees.

Call for Artists:Handmade & Homegrown Show & sale

Handmade & Homegrown is an outdoor event for local artists and plant enthusiasts to display and sell their handmade and homegrown items.  All artwork must be handmade by the Exhibitor and all plants must be grown at the Exhibitor’s home. Non-profit organizations related to art or plants may also purchase a space to be manned by their members.  

Applications and images must be submitted no later than October 31, 2013. Call for Artists: Hecho a Mano Boutique

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center invites local, regional and national visual artists to join in the launching of our new Hecho a Mano Boutique. We also invite all artists working in all media to create one-of-a-kind, handmade wreaths for auction at ¡Ay Corona!, the annual Holiday Wreath exhibition and party, on Friday, November 22, 2013, 6-9 p.m. at the Guadalupe Theater.

Application deadline is Monday, September 30, 2013 by 5 p.m. CST. Selections will be made by October 15, and all work must be delivered to GCAC by Wednesday, November 4, 2013.

September 17th SAPG Meeting Acquisitions

Do you have a recent ceramics acquisition in your collection? Something you purchased at NCECA perhaps? Maybe a piece you acquired years ago? A vintage MacKenzie, McBride or Old MacDonald? Everyone is invited to bring one or two ceramic pieces to show off at the September 17th SAPG meeting.

It’s a ceramics collectors “Show and Tell” (except you don’t have to “Tell”). Forms will be available to fill in the artist name, owners name, date of acquisition, etc.
You can also specify “Do Not Touch” as the SAPG will not be responsible for any damages.

Workshop Description:

This workshop will focus on enlivening the surface of your ceramic vessels through slipping, sgraffito, champleve, inlay, slip trailing, terra sigillata, resist patterning, glaze layering, and utilizing atmospheric effects in electric kilns. Instruction will focus on working in cone 6 electric kiln firings, but techniques and information can be applied to all temperatures and types of kiln firings. The first part of this workshop will focus on making some simple vessel forms to try out different demonstrated surface embellishments. Functional and sculptural ceramicists alike will benefit from demonstrations and discussions intent on activating the ceramic surface. Participants should bring 5-6 of their own pots to work on - either leatherhard or bone dry (cone 5-6 clay.) Workshop attendees will also receive a packet of slip, terra sigallatta, and glazes recipes for use in their home studios.

Recommended for students who can center 2+ pounds of clay or who can comfortably handbuild ceramic forms. However, this workshop focuses on decorative techniques - students will not be on the wheel during class time.

“Six Degrees of Separation in the Ceramics World” By Kevin Van Winkle

The purpose of “Six Degrees of Separation in the Ceramics World” is to provide an educational activity for all San Antonio Potters Guild members to participate in. You can trace your clay “roots” and see how you connect to others on a large scale map which may peak your interest to research people on the map you are not familiar with.

“Six Degrees of Separation” is the theory that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps.

The game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” was invented as a play on the concept. The goal is to link any actor to Kevin Bacon through no more than six connections, where two actors are connected if they have appeared in a movie or commercial together.

Facebook's data team released two papers in November 2011 which document that amongst all Facebook users at the time of research (721 million users with 69 billion friendship links) there is an average distance of 4.74.

Here’s how to play:

Step 1. Create your connection list.

Your first connection must be someone you studied with, as the ceramics class instructor or ceramics workshop leader.

Your subsequent connections (2-6) should be someone the previously named person studied or was affiliated with.

You can send as many lists as you want as long as your first connection is a different person from your previous list. (Example: You took a class from Dennis Smith and a class from Ryan Takaba, so, you can submit two lists.)

Clayworld workshop

We are going to spend two days pulling seemingly random thoughts out and putting them  together in a personal clay narrative. Working with low fire clay, a very forgiving material, I’ll show you how I achieve a layered, watercolor effect on my whimsical ceramics. 

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Tuesday, August 6th, from 10 AM until Noon, we will be having a 2-hour workshop with visiting AMACO artist Diana Faris! The cost is only $15.00, supplies and firing included!

This glaze workshop will demonstrate the effect of Amaco’s Velvet Underglazes (V) underneath their LG and Opalescent series of glaze on four textured tiles.

Diana will also demonstrate how she builds a teapot.

The participants’ tiles will be fired and ready two days after the workshop for pick up at their convenience.
