In Her Own Words "Catherine Bani-Yassin"

I work with clay, because I love the connection between my hands and a corporeal medium. Although I started out as a painting major, my discovery of clay halfway through my journey at UTSA was somewhat a revelation. It was then that I fell in love with clay, and I haven’t looked back.

When I make my little bottles and vases, it reminds me of times in my grandmother’s home, surrounded by her little collections and knick knacks. Delicate porcelain figurines, glass vases, and candy dishes mingled among the scent of White Shoulders and cigars. As I now make my own little bottles and vases, it often brings me back to those sweet times of exploration, and admiration of a time gone by.

Working with paper clay allows me to push clay to its limits. Sometimes I’m surprised at how far I can push it! It has helped me to bring my version/vision of old knick knacks to fruition.

My work starts out with sketches on a notepad I carry with me everywhere. Inspiration can be found any place, or any time. When I am working on a piece, it may start from an image on paper, but it takes on a life of its own once hand meets clay. The end result may not be exactly as I originally imagined, but it leaves open the possibility of the next piece I sit down to create.

19th Annual Juried Exhibition "SA Clay"

The Exhibition Committee of the San Antonio Potters Guild is excited to announce the dates for our 19th Annual Juried Exhibition, "SA Clay"! We have a new venue at Darryl Mix's Art SA Gallery and Austin potter, Ryan McKerley, will be this year's Juror. Awards will total $1,000! Artists may drop off their work to Art SA Gallery at 108 E. Mistletoe on Saturday, April 28th, 2012 between the hours of 9 am and 12 pm. We are doing things a little differently this year in that artists will be notified the afternoon of April 30th and unselected work will be available for pick up at the gallery April 30th and May 1st from 4 - 8 pm.

The opening will be Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 5 - 9 pm and the Exhibition will run until June 1, 2012. Unsold work will need to be picked up on June 2, 2012 from 1 - 3 pm.

Please visit our website at www.sanantoniopottersguild.com for more information and to get a copy of this year's prospectus.
We also need volunteers for the day that artwork is delivered to Art Sa Gallery, and for help with food and clean up the night of the opening. This event is always a success because of YOU, the guild members, and I hope to see you all at the opening! Please contact me at cbaniyassin@aol.com if you would like to volunteer to help.
Thank you!

Empty Bowls!

Our annual charity event "Empty Bowls" is about to happen. All year long bowls have been dropped off at Clayworld. Several Bowl-a-thons have happened. Celebrity Bowls work day brought local dignitaries into the world of clay.

Each year we are amazed at how our artists pull this off. Thanks to our partnership with SAMMinstries, AT&T and our local chefs, we continue to raise money for a good cause.

Check out our press coverage!

Celebrity Bowls

The Guild met up with local celebrities at SAMMinstries on Blanco Road. This was a good way to get a lot of bowls done at one time. John Nelson and Leslie Newton helped our newly inducted potters produce their best work ever! Their work and other celebrities will have their work sold at silent auction on March 4th.

Glaze Time

The Bowl-a-Thon was very successful. You made about 400 bowls and we are now almost at our goal of 2000 bowls.  NOW is the time to come into the School of Art to glaze your bowls. They are all fired and ready to go. We need everyone who made bowls to return to glaze your bowls. Please don't leave it for someone else to do because the bowls should be all yours.  You have until 5 pm, Feb. 4 to get them glazed and on the shelves which will be marked "Empty Bowls". Remember: the deadline is February 4 (Saturday).
Open studio hours are Mon.-Thurs. from 12:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Sat. from 12:00 to 5:00. If you are not currently a student at SSA, please find a Guild member to help you with glazing. Don't do it if you are not familiar with the process.

Next Meeting: Sushi!

MAKING SUSHI and not out of clay

WHERE: Copper Kitchen, Southwest School of Art
WHEN:   February 13 - Monday - note the date change - at 6:30 p.m.
PROGRAM: Making Sushi.  Ryan Takaba will show us how to roll sushi (no raw fish will be used). You will all get a chance to help make a roll and eat it too! This is a free event for current members. If you bring a guest or are not a member, it will be $3. Some of the rolls will be vegetarian and/or gluten free.

Please RSVP to leslienewton@att.net to let her know if you want to come. This way, we will have an idea of how much to buy.

So to summarize: the day of the week has changed only for this meeting due to Ryan's schedule
You should please let Leslie know if you are coming. If you just show up, she may fit you in, but try not to. A reminder will be sent.

Friday, January 13, 2012

It is 10:45 and we have potters already producing bowls. I am excited to see how many we can make this weekend. The air will be dry (and filled with pollen) so we should be able to have some potters throw and trim on the same day. Check out facebook for updates through out the weekend. We are up and "Bowling!"

Free Tent Fram

Mary Lance would like to offer a free tent frame. It doesn't have a cover and it is slightly rusted in places. Contact her at mlance1@satx.rr.com  if you are interested or need more information.

Bowl-a-Thon 2012

Less than a week away and the Guild is hosting a bowl-a-thon at Southwest School of Art. Last year we make 500 bowls over the course of 3 days.
Jan. 13 from 10-9 pm
Jan. 14 from 12-6 pm
Jan. 15 from 12-5 pm.
If you are on Facebook go to Bowl-a-thon Event and rsvp! You can comment here too to confirm you'll attend. It's recommended you come two days. One to throw and one to trim. But if you can't, pray for dry weather and place the bowls outside to speed up the drying process.  SSA will fire the work once it is dried and we'll let everyone know the glazing date. Imagine you get to throw high fire clay for free! It's pot-luck.  See you there.
