We are going to spend two days pulling seemingly random thoughts out and putting them  together in a personal clay narrative. Working with low fire clay, a very forgiving material, I’ll show you how I achieve a layered, watercolor effect on my whimsical ceramics. I prefer to work with white low fire clay (I use Longhorn White and am currently transitioning to B-Mix ^5 for my functional wares). It’s easiest to carve and cleanest for attachments.
You can work with whatever you want.
  • I will bring leather hard, low fire tiles for attendees to carve.
  • We can bisque them overnight. You may also bring a piece of white, textured/carved bisque ware to dabble with on Sunday.
  • I will have some of my glazes and underglazes available for use. You may bring your favorites.
Supplies list for Attendees to bring
  • low fire white clay
  • You may bring a canvas-covered ware board to work on, but the tables are canvas-covered.
  • General handbuilding tools and texture tools, exacto, brushes, 2 small lidded cups for slip and water, etc
  • A one gallon ziplock bag
  • Paper and pencil
  • If you have smallish molds for pressing or pouring, that’d be nice
  • I will bring casting slip, plus slip for attachments and decorating. ^05
  • Ya’ll supply your own rolling pins and slab guides if you’d like
Saturday
  • Relief carving on leather hard earthenware tiles (provided) as we begin mark making, talking about tool choices and clay consistency.
  • We will sketch quick images about the senses. This will lead us to the forms we will sculpt for “narratives”.
  • Begin sculpting
  • Lunch break - You may bring your lunch or eat across the street at Chris Madrid or elsewhere (may take more time). The Guild will provide bottled water.
  • Demo and conversation about slip cast and press mold elements
  • Demo of slip frosting with magic slip.
  • End of day I will discuss my approach to achieving a watercolor effect and the use of commercial glazes.
            Sunday
  • Color and glaze tiles/or already bisqued pieces
  • Continue building narrative
  • Discuss the importance of FUN in the making of art and how to apply this in your personal repertoire of work.

This workshop is limited to 16 people. Your deposit must be postmarked by Aug. 24, 2013.
